Street ViewText Box: Little Theatre Refurbishing Project: Going GREEN with a 1921 Building

The Board of Directors of the Crow River Players want to preserve this quaint landmark in downtown New London and in the process make the building more energy efficient. We started the process by hiring a building inspector to make sure our efforts were not wasted on sentiment for a building past its prime. To our delight, the inspection results revealed a structurally sound building well worth preservation.

The two most pressing issues:
The shingles must be replaced as they have only one year of life left in them.
The exterior cement wall needs insulation to stop the outrageous heating bills and give the building a much needed clean fresh look.

This project is a joint effort between the Crow River Players and a group of 12 gifted eighth graders that participated in a project called YES (Youth Energy Summit). The now 9th graders researched the energy consumption of the building and presented their recommendations to the board. This project evolved from their recommendations. We plan to insulate the cement block exterior with Blue Board insulation, then cover it with a protective stucco paint finish. The YES team agreed with this product because it has a substantial R-value, that works as a moisture barrier and is mold resistant. This innovative finish will be 1/3 the cost of a conventional exterior. This group of teenagers is so committed to this project that they have volunteered to be part of the work force next spring. Along with a new roof, attic venting becomes necessary to prevent condensation and a complete gutter system will also be part of the project. When completed these projects will reduce our energy consumption (presently over $1,000 a month during the winter) and improve the exterior appearance of the historic building. The total price tag will be close to $50,000.
Through our joint efforts we have already raised $15,000.

We are asking the public to consider helping us reach our goal, by giving a tax deductible contribution to preserving The Little Theatre.
